Potty Training

Today I did intense potty-training by putting Cal in underwear for the entire day. He was excited about earning Lightning McQueen stickers on his potty chart, and he likes his big boy underwear. He had as many accidents as he did successes today. I'm tired. Any volunteers to potty-train Teddy for me in two years?

Potty training can be difficult, especially boys. Now, obviously I can't compare since I only had boys. But, I can tell you that both my boys were three or so before being trained. I was so afraid they would be in pull-ups in the 4's room and they wouldn't let them in. Fear not, they do get trained. MacGyver would had been sooner, but I missed my opportunity. He was ready and we were taking the train to Montana and I didn't want to deal with it on the train so I waited till we got home a week later and he was no longer interested or ready. Once you start, don't look back. Hang in there and get lots of detergent, you'll need it!

Boys, I have to say, ARE harder than girls to train ... and I agree with Paige, wait until they are close to being 3. I think they are too distracted and not physically mature enough to "get it". However . . . my brother's youngest son trained himself when he wanted to wear "big boy" pants just like his older brother. My sister-in-law merely mentioned that in order to do that, you can't wet in your diaper anymore. Charles thought about it for a moment, and then said, "OK". I don't think it was quite as easy for the older boy, however!

Kim, I feel your pain! We are in the midst of training ourselves. In fact, the only way I got Sophie to put her "big girl underwear" on the other day was to tell her that Calvin was wearing underwear too! She wasn't wanting to get out of pullups, which we had done just for a few days because we had to be out of the house. Sophie suddenly went on the potty for the first time after T.T. our first week, and she's been mostly staying dry since then. (Probably because she only actually goes about 3 times a day--I'm trying to ply her with beverages!!) We're not so lucky with the "#2" incidents! Hang in there!

Hi Ken and Kim - saw your link on the Dyer's blog. Alas - we are struggling with the potty training thing as well. Kate was doing very well in April - every time she sat on the potty, she went - #1 and #2. I thought I must be a good parent or she must be a super bright kid - potty trained before age 2!! But then we took a week vacation to Grandma's and she wouldn't use the potty at all. And now we are back to ground zero. She won't even sit on the potty. *sigh* And now we wait....wait until she is ready to try again because we don't want to force her. But her big-girl Dora undies are ready for her! Hopefully we will get this thing under control soon. Hope things are going well for your family down in KY. We have friends at Southern (chris and dana davis, and aaron cronk) - maybe you will run into them sometime. Take care!
